I think you can generalize and say that most engines will take the 1.5 amp units fine. Exceptions for me have been the Sunset Geeps with dual motors and I think SHS recommends a heavier unit for their F units.

I run many engines with Digitrax 120 series (120-121-123), many with 163's , a few with 140's, several with 83's (no longer made) and I bought a bunch of 383's that I think are about 4 amps because I got a good deal on them.Right now I'm running a Rex Docksider with the original open frame motor with a 121 and it's seems to work fine. - Bob Werre (S-Scale Modeling 28 Mar 2005)

I know Bob has installed a lot of decoders, so the above information is very useful. This is especially true of his comment about the Rex 0-4-0T motor, which is a Pittman DC-71A. Previously I figured a model with an open frame motor required a big capacity, expensive decoder, which meant it was more practical to replace the motor with a newer, low amp can motor.

I myself have settled mostly on the NCE D13SR (1.3 amp, 2.0 amp peak) decoder for my installations, though I have one Digitrax decoder and one Lenz decoder in models. I put one in an AM FP-7, purchased in 1985, and it works great.

The FP-7 installation required sort of a leap of faith on my part. The DCC experts advise measuring the motor's stall (peak) current, then using a decoder to match. I skipped that step and simply wired the D13SR decoder in place. I was prepared for the worst, but the decoder/motor combination worked out well: no erratic performance; no smoke; no flames. - Bill Roberts (S-Scale Modeling 28 Mar 2005)

We've used a pretty good cross section of decoders on the Des Plaines Valley, our guru can't make up his mind! They're installed in most AM and SHS diesels with no problem. Mainly we have gone to other decoders to improve response especially when running several locomotives in consist. I've sort of settled on North Coast for steam, although I installed Zema decoders in my T-1's. - Jim [Raison One](S-Scale Modeling 29 Mar 2005)
Can anyone reccomend a good way to clean the track on a large exhibition layout, whihc has a number of tracks covered by scenery. We currently use sandpaper or track cleaning fluid but find it unsatisfactory.
I like the wet method, I run Center Line rollers and use Goo Gone on them. Nice wet application. Then to help keep things clean run a car or two with Masonite blocks under them to keep the lintand dust off.

If the layout is in a fairly dust free environment you may find oils like RailZip works great. Just a drop or two is all you want to use, then let the trains spread it around the layout. But if there is no ceiling or dust in the area, then the oil acts like a magnet and will attract it all right on the rail heads.

But I would suggest you might want to stop using the sandpaper, even fine paper will put grooves in the rail heads, and they will just collect more dirt in the grooves. - Don Crano (Digitrax 3 Sep 2000)
