Kids Cafe

One of the saddest truths about hunger in America is the number of children who do not have enough to eat.  the best estimates place some 12 million children at risk.  But hunger for a child means much more than an empty stomach.  It also means not measuring up to typical height and weight standards.  And it often leads to poor school performance since the body will stop sending energy to the brain.

Recognizing that more needed to be done.  Second Harvest introduced a new program to provide meals to kids in an environment that is safe, accessible, and convenient.  It is called, "Kids Cafe."  Launched nationally in 1993, the concept ahs proven to be successful that the program has expanded its reach into dozens of communities across the county.  And even more are in the panning stages.

Since each of the cafes is designed to meet the needs of children living a particular community, no two programs are identical.  Some programs offer breakfast on the weekend or lunch during the summer or dinner in the evening.  But each program does share a common goal of providing meals exclusively to children.

Many of the cafes are sponsored by companies in communities where their employees can volunteer and become involved in the program.  Combined with every of local groups and individuals, Kids Cafes are able to provide a grassroots approach to alleviating childhood hunger.
